Chick-fil-A's Famous Chicken Sandwich |
Chick-fil-A’s value proposition focuses on high-quality food, excellent customer service, and a family-friendly atmosphere. However, its controversy over LGBTQ+ issues has turned its value proposition into a source of conflict for many consumers.
Black Lives Matter Protest |
Boycotts Due to Stance on LGBTQ+ Rights:
The stance is mostly negative, especially with LGBTQ+ consumers, who feel that the company isn't supporting their values. Social media apps like Twitter are constantly flooded with boycott calls, especially around Pride Month.
On Twitter, a user tweeted “I won’t support Chick-fil-A anymore because of their anti-LGBTQ+ stance. There are so many better fast food options that don’t harm our community. #BoycottChickfila” Tweets like this can affect the brand in a negative way.
Support for Chick-fil-A Amid Criticism:
“Chick-fil-A has the best food and the friendliest service. I’m not going to stop supporting them because of political views. #StandWithChikFilA” Some people still continue to support either way because of their service and awesome food.
Calls for Apology or Clarification
“If Chick-fil-A wants to save their image, they need to publicly apologize and clarify their stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Silence is not an option. #ChickfilA #LGBTQRights” Some still want Chick-fil-A to make a statement and stop being silent about where they stand with all this drama. Either apologizing or explaining its actions, some critics argue that the company should address the controversy directly and be transparent about its views and actions, especially since the issue continues to affect its brand image.
Social Media Analysis:
Chick-fil-A has over more than 10 million followers on Instagram. Their social media is focused mainly on promoting their new products and the new items that get added to the menu, and customer engagement. When the company posts it often receives a mix of praise and criticism, in a post celebrating National Chicken Sandwich Day had people leaving enthusiastic comments about the chicken sandwiches but also with a lot of comments about the political and social stances.
Chick-fil-A posts frequently with updates about new menu items and charitable contributions and holiday promotion. The company avoids addressing the LGBTQ+ controversy on social media. The company rarely responds to criticisms directly, which leads some to believe that it’s trying to stay out of all fire to not face the criticism.
Marketing Challenge:
Chick-fil-A’s traditional Christian values with the increasing demand from consumers for inclusivity and social progress. The company’s loyal consumers are of all religions so they don't always post about Christianity. The marketing efforts are currently between promoting its food and service or avoiding its controversies. This makes it difficult to maintain a brand message because of them never facing the problem but it seems like they do just fine without facing it.
How Chick-fil-A Could Respond:
If I were the brand manager for Chick-fil-A I would be more transparent because I think Chick-fil-A should acknowledge the controversy and take steps to clarify its current position on LGBTQ+ rights. An apology for past actions that caused backlash, like the donations to anti LGBTQ+ organizations would show accountability to evolve and improve.
Chick-fil-A could also make a public statement on their popular social medias explaining how it plans to be a more welcoming environment for all customers. It would be beneficial for the company to include a partnership with a LGBTQ+ organization or set an event to celebrate. These steps would help to rebuild trust in customers and show that the company is willing to listen to its critics.
I would recommend that Chick-fil-A interacts more with its social media audience. Ignoring negative comments just makes the problems worse, and it would show that the company values its customers.
Conclusion:
Chick-fil-A’s struggle with its LGBTQ+ rights stance on social media is a great example of how a company’s values can influence to the publics eye. With the company's loyal following, its avoided to address the controversy. Chick-fil-A needs to own up and offer a clear and sincere response, the company could regain trust and demonstrate that it is willing to evolve with the times. Through this assignment, I’ve learned that companies cannot afford to ignore public opinion, especially in the age of social media. A brand’s response can have effects on its image, transparency and engagement are important to navigate the crises in the social media age.
